This year, for the first time, Ukraine marks 8 May as the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945.

From the address of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy:

‘The world overslept through the revival of Nazism at 5am on 24 February 2022. And today, everyone who remembers the Second World War and has survived to this day is experiencing repetition of a similar thing,

Only a united free world can stop this, just as in 1945. United in an anti-Putin coalition. Not with words, but with actions, it can stop the Nazis of Moscow, prevent the new evil from spreading to the entire European continent, and subsequently to the whole world. Prove your commitment to the words ‘Never again!’ so that ‘Never again!’ becomes relevant again.’

FOR REFERENCE

According to Ukrinform, last year, the Verkhovna Rada passed a law ‘On the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II of 1939-1945’ that established 8 May as the Day of Remembrance and Victory, the only date on which Ukraine celebrates the victory over Nazism and commemorates those who died in World War II. From now on, there will also be a day off on 8 May, when martial law in Ukraine ends.
