This week, the European Transport Workers’ Federation ETF (of which our trade union is a member organisation – ed.) took part in a trade union summit in support of Ukraine, organised by the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) together with the Ukrainian confederations Federation of Trade Unions of Ukraine (FTU) and Confederation of Free Trade Unions of Ukraine (CFTU).

ITF General Secretary Livia Spera stressed the extremely important role of Ukrainian transport unions (railway workers, seafarers, port workers) in the ITF family of unions.

We are unwavering in our support,’ the ETF said in a statement on its official website.

Key points from Libya Spera’s speech:

– We need to build the capacity of Ukrainian trade unions in terms of regulation, organisation and the EU legislative process.

– Bilateral cooperation and exchange of experience between trade unions is extremely important.

– Ukrainian trade unions should actively engage with ETF sections and networks of multinational companies.

– As for the protection of workers’ rights, joining the EU will help protect the salaries and working conditions of Ukrainians working in the EU.

War cannot be an excuse for the destruction of workers’ rights! The ETF and our unions have committed to developing an action plan to support Ukrainian transport workers,’ said the General Secretary.
